Impact of ESE Systematic Oral Language Development

Despite the clear emphasis in the Science of Reading research, the need for systematic and explicit oral language development continues to get underemphasized in favor of phonics instruction with both the general and special education student populations.¹

We can't solely rely on the great work of Speech & Language Pathologists for our Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students. It’s absolutely critical that these students get purposeful, sustained opportunities for conversational turns and other activities that engage ESE students and get them to participate along with their classmates.

Take a look at this video from a veteran Kindergarten teacher, Heather Greist, who prioritized systematic and explicit oral language development activities with the AskMeno program and saw the impact it had on her ESE students. To sum it up, she shares, “I've been able to see how much the [ESE students'] language develops with opportunities to have these conversations in the classroom.”
